Tight Race Expected for NFL MVP

The 2020 NFL season is fast-approaching, and one of the biggest storylines will be who will take home the NFL MVP. Will last year’s winner Lamar Jackson repeat, or will reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes earn his second regular season MVP? Or perhaps we’ll see someone who, like Jackson and Mahomes, rose out of nowhere to win the award.

Best Bets

Mahomes (+350) – In 2018, his first year as the starting QB, he won the league MVP. The following season, he led Kansas City to a Super Bowl victory. The sky is the limit for Mahomes, who is still just 24-years old. The Chiefs are bringing back all of their top offensive weapons like WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce, and still have offensive mastermind Andy Reid at the helm. In an offseason that has been anything but ordinary, having continuity helps, making Mahomes the easiest safe bet to snatch his second MVP.

Jackson (+700) – Another second-year player in his first year as the starter, Jackson dominated the entire regular season with a lethal combination of passing and running. He led the league with 36 touchdown passes, while also setting the record for most rushing yards by a QB with 1,206. His achievements made him the second unanimous MVP ever, and the second-youngest winner as well. Perhaps the league will better anticipate The 23-year old Jackson this year, but Baltimore is a strong enough team to contend once again, and a great season by Jackson could make him the sixth back-to-back winner of the award.

Brady (+1000) – The third-most recent MVP winner will have a new home for the first time in his NFL career. The new Buccaneers signal-caller has the fourth-highest MVP odds in his 21st season in the NFL, as he aims for his fourth-MVP award, which would place him second on the all-time list. Brady will have some serious weapons to throw too in Tampa Bay, with WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin as well as his former Patriots teammate TE Rob Gronkowski. Armed with an explosive offense and firmly on a mission, Brady could certainly get the Bucs back to the postseason and be right in the mix for MVP.

Murray (+1200) – The last two MVPs have been young quarterbacks in their second year, blessed with big arms and high athleticism. Sound familiar? Murray fits the bill, as the number one pick in 2019 may be poised for a breakout season with the Cardinals. Last season, Murray threw for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns, while also running for close to 550 yards. Unlike Mahomes and Jackson, Murray started all 16 games as a rookie, which may help his development due to this shortened offseason. Not to mention, Arizona made one of the biggest acquisitions of the off-season when they traded for star WR DeAndre Hopkins, giving Murray an elite pass-catching option. Perhaps the stars are aligning for Murray to join the previous two award winners in continuing the trend.

McCaffrey (+2500) – The first non-QB on the list of potential MVP winners, CMC is aiming to be the first non-QB to win the MVP since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006. It took a historic season for Tomlinson to win the award, but if anyone can put up gaudy numbers, McCaffrey may be the guy. Last season, the third-year back led the league with 1,387 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, not to mention 1,005 receiving yards. He alone accounted for 43% of his team’s offensive yards in 2019, the largest percentage for any individual player in the league. While Carolina is expected to go into a rebuild, if McCaffrey is able to top those numbers in 2020, he could build a very intriguing case for MVP.
