North Carolina Plans to Approve New Casinos
Lawmakers in North Carolina are considering approving up to four additional casinos in the state’s more rural regions. They point to a casino that just opened a few miles north of the Virginia state border in Danville as evidence that gaming can aid struggling economies.
In May, a massive air-conditioned tent was the location for Caesars’s temporary Danville casino. Visitors try their luck on rows of vividly colored slot machine screens as upbeat music plays in the background (smoking is permitted within). Parking lot is packed with automobiles, many with North Carolina license plates; this facility is bustling even on a weekday afternoon.
A bigger structure is being constructed just beyond the tent on the site of a defunct textile factory. When it debuts the next year, it will have a 500-room hotel, convention center, and 2,500-seat theater — just the kind of venue that may bring to Danville events like concerts and corporate conventions.
All Brand New North Carolina Casinos
Several new casinos have been approved by the Virginia Assembly, including this one in Danville. These casinos are all located in the southern part of the state, close to the border with North Carolina.
According to Ken Larking, city manager of Danville, once people saw Caesar’s proposal, they voted decisively in favor of the casino idea.
Similarly, North Carolina’s political leaders believe the state would profit from allowing more casinos. Senate Majority Leader Phil Berger lives near the Danville casino in Rockingham County. Hopefully, they also legalize online casino platforms.
