Tyson vs. Jones Jr ended in a draw, but Iron Mike wants more
Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr put on a Show
It was clearly specified before the event; the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. fight was an exhibition bout and wasn’t going to have an official ruling. The WBC made sure to emphasize on this in the previous days, and they did also in the result of the fight, calling it a draw.
There were not even official judges on ring side, but the WBC selected three former boxing champions to judge the fight remotely, just for fun, and send in their numbers after the fight. For many, Mike Tyson was the clear winner in this exhibition fight, however, it wasn’t really important, as people just really wanted to see these two legends back in the ring, at 54 and 51 years old, and give their best.
There were a total of 2-minute 8 rounds in this fight, and even though Iron Mike stated in an interview after the fight that he wanted 3-minute rounds, it was clear that the time was just enough for both fighters, who showed fatigue signs ever since the third or fourth round already.
Don’t get us wrong, it was a good fight, and it was great to see that both came to the event with the intention to take the win home. Tyson was probably more in shape and hungrier for the result, even though he’s been retired for 15 years already, while Jones retired just under 3 years ago.
Tyson was more aggressive, as always, while Jones was a little bit more precautious and spent much of his fight holding on to Tyson, trying to avoid a big hit.
After the fight, it was clear that Jones was exhausted, and happy to get it over with, while Tyson looked a lot more hyped and probably could have gone a couple more rounds to try to get his KO.
Will we see an Episode 2 of Tyson vs Jones Jr?
Both fighters were interviewed together right after the draw was announced, and right there Tyson made it clear that he intends to keep going. He feels in top shape, he plans to keep working out, and didn’t hesitate to say to Jones Jr. that “they have to do this again”.
Jones, however, was a lot more cautious with his words, even though in the end he agreed he wants to do it, but he needs to shake last night off first, discuss it with his family and then make a decision on whether or not he can fight Tyson again.
At 54 years old, it’s clear that Tyson’s punch and strength are just not the same as before, but Jones did mention how powerful his rival still is, and that it takes a lot to actually receive his body shots for 8 rounds.
After being asked if he was actually worried about being damaged in this exhibition fight, he didn’t give a straight answer, but made sure to emphasize that it’s not a regular person in the other corner, it’s Mike Tyson, and not many people could take what he just took.
Will there be a round 2? We’ll have to wait and see, but things are not looking so bad. To learn more and boxing and how to bet it click here
