Sports Betting in the Dakotas

In our latest online sports news, we’ll take a look at sports betting markets in the US. Particularly that of North and South Dakota. Both states prove interesting as despite sharing a name, these two could not be more different when it comes to their gambling laws. For sports betting in the Dakotas, efforts to legalize this industry in both states are different. Hopefully, of course, the outcome will be favorable to those who love to bet on sports.

When it comes to betting laws in the US, there are many variations in the details.  From taxation, licensing, operations, to what people can bet on. Some states only allow for online sports betting, while some limit sports wagering to brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. Some allow almost any sports event, while some ban college sports, with some states offering policies in between the two opposite laws.

As sports betting software brings the sports betting experience to people safely at home, one would think this would be a popular option in the state. However, HB 1231, which does propose online wagering in the state, was voted down just this week.

As for North Dakota, efforts to legalize online sports betting is underway. There are currently two bills that propose sports betting and online poker. However, these bills only require the vote to be put in the ballot for November 2022. Both states are a long time away from offering online sports betting. A weakness that neighboring states like Iowa, are benefitting from. With live betting platform and a more open gambling market in Iowa, they are attracting residents from South Dakota, therefore earning revenue and taxes from outsiders, in addition to their rapidly growing betting market.
