2020 MLB Regular Season Update
Teams Ready for First Pitch of 2020 MLB Regular Season
After months of negotiating, the MLB and the MLBPA have finally reached an agreement that will allow the 2020 season to happen, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Both parts have committed for a short 60-game season that will start on July 23rd or 24th, according to the announcement made by Commissioner Rob Manfred recently.
It wasn’t easy to reach an agreement, as we can all imagine, after so many months of not being able to meet each part’s needs and demands, salaries being the main issue on the table, but also safety concerns, locations, format of play and other things that made the negotiations harder than expected. Another important thing, of course, is the fact that the games will be played behind closed doors, as expected. There will also be a few rule changes and restrictions, all in hopes to prevent any type of issues or the spread of the virus. But baseball fans and bettors will take anything at this time.
These are some of the rule changes that will be applied to the 2020 season:
– Team relocations: Teams will be allowed to play at home, but the MLB has the right to move games to neutral sites, if necessary, due to safety concerns.
– Universal Designated Hitter: Not really something the parts could agree on but imposed by the league because it’s safer for players.
– Extra Innings: Trying to prevent games from going too long, a runner will be placed at second base at the start of each half of each extra inning, giving the batting team better options to score.
– Roster size: 30 on Opening Day, 28 two weeks after the season start, and 26 two weeks after that.
– Injured list: There will be a 10-day injured list as a general rule, but there will also be a “Coronavirus list”, and there are no set rules for this list; the team will take as long as necessary to make sure the player is well recovered, before returning to action.
– Suspended games: All games can now be suspended due to weather, regardless if they have gone 5 full innings or not.
These are some of the key dates for the 2020 MLB season:
– July 1st: Official reporting day for training camps at home fields.
– July 23rd or 24th: Opening Day.
– August 31st: Trade deadline.
– September 15th: Last day or playoff roster eligibility.
– September 27th: Regular season ends.
– Postseason format is yet to be defined.
As mentioned before, the season will consist o 60 games for each team, 40 against same division teams, and 20 against non-division opponents, always trying to stay within the same geographical territory, to avoid excessive traveling.
