How to Bet on NFL – Straight Bets

No matter which online sportsbook you use to bet on the NFL, the wagering setup will always be the same. You first login to your sportsbook, then you go to the NFL section to place your football betting pick. From there the first betting options you will see are Point Spread Betting, Money Line Betting and Total Bets.  These are the main type of bets available for the NFL.

Here is an example of NFL betting odds that we will use for this tutorial:

Teams Point Spread Money Line Totals
Atlanta Falcons -9 (-110) -200 49.5 (-110)o
Miami Dolphins +9 (-110) +150 49.5 (-110)u

Betting on the NFL Point Spread

How to Bet on NFL - Straight BetsIt is a type of side bet that equalizes the chance of winning a wager. The NFL Odds for a team will be shown with a – or + symbol in front of it. Thus, it shows whether a team is a favorite or an underdog with the – being the favorite team.

Interestingly enough, the most popular bet on the NFL is the point spread. In fact, 80% of football wagers are pointspread bets. This is probably because it allows players to wager on their favorite team with better odds of winning.

Thus, an NFL point spread wager is basically a bet that equalizes the chance of winning a wager.  This is done by giving a point advantage to the underdog.  Thus, in the above example, the point spread is -9 for the Falcons.  This means that in order to win that bet, Falcons have to win by more than 9 points.

On the other hand, if you bet the point spread on the Dolphins, there is two ways to win your bet.  The first is if they win the game and the second is if they to lose by less than 9 points. The-110 you see in the sports betting odds represents the commission by the sportsbook. Thus, the sportsbook gets a 10% commission for taking your bet.  If the commission was -115, it would mean they take a 15% commission.

Betting on the NFL Money Line

Betting on the NFL Money Line is straight forward.  It just means that you bet on the winner of the matchup.  However, since the Falcons are the favorite team, you have to bet more money to win less.  Thus, they have -200 betting odds which mean you have to bet $200 to win $100. On the other hand, if you bet on the Miami Dolphins at +150, you bet $100 to win $150.

Betting on the NFL Totals

Betting on the NFL Totals is also very simple and is another popular type of football bet. This is where you bet on whether the final score will be higher or lower than the shown number. Thus, if you bet on over at 49.5, you are betting that the combined final score will be 49.5 points.

As you can see, it takes a lot of skills to open a sportsbook as making odds is a tough job. However, as your sports gambling skills increase, you will understand why the odds are set as such with just a glance.

Basic NFL Betting Tips

Basic NFL Betting TipsNFL Betting Bankroll Management – A significant error that numerous bettors commit is the expenditure of funds without implementing any form of bankroll management. It is essential to establish limits and adhere to a structured plan for your NFL betting; otherwise, the situation can rapidly become unmanageable.

One of the most straightforward strategies is to determine a weekly or monthly cap for your NFL wagers. For instance, you might decide on a limit of $20 each week. By adhering to this cap, you will prevent depleting your finances and utilize your bankroll more efficiently, as you will be restricted to a finite number of bets.

Additionally, some individuals opt to only reinvest their initial deposit amount, such as the $20 per week, while setting aside their winnings. This approach can facilitate the rapid accumulation of a cash reserve.

Make Sound and Logical Decision – In simple words, don’t bet with your heart or your favorite team. While betting on your favorite NFL team can be enjoyable and occasionally rewarding, it is not a formula for profit.

For example, your favorite team is underperforming or facing a formidable NFL opponent that they are unlikely to beat.  Would it make sense to bet on them to win? The rationale for placing a bet on them becomes questionable. To optimize your potential earnings in NFL betting, it is essential to detach your emotions and base your wagers exclusively on thorough research, current performance, and statistical analysis.
